AS coursework 3D Outcome

I hand crafted a lantern consisting of engraved glass and a wooden base. The lantern is inspired by Hereford Cathedral. I drew four different designs shown below for the four individual pieces of glass, the designs show a collage of different features of the cathedral.

A Recent Exhibition

I recently visited the Artes Mundi, an exhibition at the Welsh National Museum. This is a contemporary visual exhibition that explores social themes from across the world. It consists of work by seven artists that I find each to be unique in their own way to either express, or to challenge moral issues. The display that caught my attention the most was Sheela Gowda’s installation Kagebangara.  It comprises of beaten flat and stacked tar drums with tarpaulin sheets. My first impression was that the materials, which were sourced from near Gowda’s hometown, looked exceedingly out of place in comparison to the clean white walls of the gallery, but I noticed that it is this element, which heightens the contrast to the poverty which migrants and Indian road workers face. This particular display left me with me a thought provoking and lasting impression concerning poverty and injustice.

A Building I Would Like To Visit

I would like to visit the Wuhan Energy Flower in China, designed by Grontmij and Soeters Van Eldonk Architects. The building is currently still under construction but it will become the world’s most sustainable building after completion. The reason that I would like to witness this structure is that it represents not only the present, but also the future of architecture. The shape of the structure is inspired by the Calla Lily; I admire the design for its combination of the beauty of nature with a highly technological and modern approach. I am amazed by the fact that the structure is completely self sufficient through collecting rainwater, solar and wind energy to fulfill all of its water and power needs. The sustainability of this build is what I find most inspiring, and I believe it is a crucial aspect that should be considered more often in architecture as every decision would affect our environment and future generations. I think this will be an important step towards a new sustainable and efficient style of architecture.

Favourite Architect

“Architecture should speak of its time and place but yearn for timelessness”. Frank Gehry.

I admire the approach that Gehry brings to his work, as not only does he create architecture wherein serves a function, but he also creates buildings and structures, which are magnificent representations of art themselves. My favorite piece of work by him is the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. I am particularly impressed by this design because he has created a building of great artistic value whilst also being an idealistic venue to house masterpieces of art. I am inspired by the Deconstructive style combined with the various curves of the titanium surface, which catches and reflects off rays of light.

Why I Want To Study At Manchester School Of Architecture?

Ever since my first visit to Manchester, I was mesmerized by the city’s cultural diversity and the inspirational variety of architectural styles. Architecture to me is characterized by innovation and modern technology combined with historical and cultural context. I am keen to develop my passion for design, as well as my fascination for both the science and history of the built environment. I seek a course that offers me the opportunity to not only develop and express my ideas, but that also presents me with an exciting and challenging experience.  The course structure at the Manchester School of Architecture provides this in every respect; it holds everything that I am seeking in studying architecture.
